Laika was originally named Kudryavka, meaning "Little Curly," but gained her more famous moniker – which translates to "Barker" – due to her vocal nature. The spacecraft's thermal control system malfunctioned, causing the cabin to overheat and ultimately leading to Laika's demise. Although initial Soviet reports claimed that Laika had perished after a week in orbit, later accounts suggested that she may have succumbed to the extreme heat within just a few hours of her journey.
