About the Course

In this course, we will look at the basics of designing and building a lightweight category rotary-wing drone. First, guidance will be given on selecting electrical components including batteries, power distribution boards, battery eliminator circuits, and electronic speed controllers. The operating mechanism of these elements will also be explained.

Next will be an analysis of the propulsion system, where the operation and different types of engines and propellers used to date for this type of aircraft will be studied. After several mentions of the structural configurations and dimensions that can be encountered, the most common sensors onboard drones to enable their autonomous guidance will be discussed: GPS and compass.

Afterward, an in-depth study of optical sensors that can enable navigation in GPS-denied environments as well as 3D reconstruction of environments will be shown. The last topic on the list is flight control where it will be shown what components are needed to perform it, how to develop your own system, and how to perform the preliminary steps needed to fly safely. Finally, extras will be presented regarding the simulation, and programming of these platforms in ROS/Gazebo environment, real missions typical of autonomous drones, and multi-agent systems.

Simone Godio

Simone Godio graduated in Aerospace Engineering at Politecnico di Torino in October 2019. He is now completing his Ph.D. in Unmanned Aircraft Vehicles Autonomous Navigation and Guidance in GPS-denied environments at Politecnico di Torino, Pic4Ser. During these years he was involved in more Autonomous Flight challenges for several open innovation applications for Exploration, Surveillance, Tracking, and Fleet Management using Drones in collaboration with Leonardo and ESA. He also collaborated with a Spanish spin-off company of the UPM called Dronomy, for employing Autonomous Drones in smart warehouse logistics. Simone currently holds a position as a researcher in Autonomously Guided Drones at Leonardo Company, among the world's 10 largest aerospace companies.
